Minister says police will recruit foreigners

Alternate Minister for Citizens Protection Nikos Toskas said in London that Hellenic Police will recruit foreigners who live in Greece, citing the example of Scotland Yard.

"We are obliged to examine such approaches so as to maintain order in the best possible way," Toskas stated according to a report in Ta Nea newspaper in Athens on Friday.

Toskas defends police estimate of turnout at 'Macedonia' rally

A dispute between the authorities and organizers of Sunday's large 'Macedonia' rally in Athens continued on Monday with Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas defending the Greek Police's (ELAS) estimate that 140,000 people attended.

Organizers claimed that turnout was much higher: between a million and a million and a half.

Alternate Minister for Public Order Nikos Toskas has personally pledged to the Israeli ambassador in Greece to have the Rouvikonas members who attacked it on Monday arrested.

Extreme left group Rouvikonas made the Embassy of Israel its latest target, hurling paint against the building in northern Athens.

Ministers attend Elefsina conference on anti-flood work

Several key ministers attended a conference in Elefsina, western Attica, on Saturday, aimed at improving anti-flood works in the region following catastrophic floods last month that killed more than 20 people and wreaked massive damage to state infrastructure and private property.

Regional authorities have already approved a 500-million-euro program for anti-flood works.
