Double standards weighing down Beleri case

Defense attorneys in the trial of ethnic Greek mayor-elect Fredi Beleri on vote-buying charges in Albania are highlighting what they call the different standards deployed by the Albanian judiciary.

Members of the ethnic Greek community allege charges against Beleri are linked to investments around the town of Himare, whose tourist development has been rapid in recent years. 

Rama made a purge in his cabinet

Among others, he dismissed the head of diplomacy, Olta Xhacka, the Albanian Post reports.
Rama asked the President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, to pass a decree on this matter, and it was announced that he will present the changes to Begaj today.
Olta Daka will no longer be the Minister of European and Foreign Affairs and Igli Hasani will be appointed to that position.

Kaskarelis requests the release of ethnic Greek mayor-elect, aide

Foreign Minister Vassilis Kaskarelis asked for the release of two ethnic Greek men who were imprisoned during a mayoral election campaign in Albania at a meeting with the country's counterpart Olta Xhacka, diplomatic sources said on Thursday.

The request was made on the sidelines of the informal Summit of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs taking place in Oslo.

Shady business deal behind mayor’s arrest?

After Albanian Foreign Minister Olta Xhacka met with her Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias last Monday to discuss elected ethnic Greek mayor of Himare Fredi Beleri's jailing on charges of buying votes, she tweeted: "The meeting w/my colleague & good friend FM @NikosDendias in Brussels was a good opportunity to discuss in a frank manner Mr Beleri's case.

Albanian MPs Approve Resolution Honouring Srebrenica Victims

MPs in the Albanian parliament voted unanimously on Thursday to support a resolution honouring the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, ahead of the anniversary next week of the July 1995 massacres of some 8,000 Bosniak men and boys by Bosnian Serb forces.

The resolution also declares July 11, when annual commemorations are held in Bosnia, as a day of remembrance in Albania.

Greece, Albania Vow to Speed up Resolution of Maritime Disputes

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, and his Albanian counterpart Olta Xhacka, meeting on Monday in Tirana, vowed to speed up resolution of their maritime disputes before the International Court of Justice, ICJ.

The two countries previously agreed to send the matter to the ICJ in 2020, after years of not being able to resolve it themselves.
