SYRIZA agreed on Tuesday to back an Independent Greeks plan for non-performing loans as the right-wing party agreed to support the leftists in their opposition to any candidate the government puts forward to succeed President Karolos Papoulias in February.

To Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis believes the government should nominate professor Nikos Alivizatos as a candidate for next year’s Presidential vote.

Stavros Theodorakis, the leader of centrist To Potami, said on Friday that his party is prepared to work with whoever wins the next general elections.

“We are open to having discussions, when the time is right, with whoever the Greek people decide should govern the country,” said Theodorakis during a visit to the Thessaloniki International Fair.

Dissenting members of the Democratic Left (DIMAR) party were meeting in Athens Monday to decide their next move.

There is increasing speculation that 28 members of the social democratic party's central committee, led by former secretary Spyros Lykoudis, will abandon the former coalition partner led by Fotis Kouvelis.

To Potami, the centrist party led by journalist Stavros Theodorakis (photo), is to publish a 36-page booklet outlining its main positions as the group prepares to hold the first meeting of its so-called dialogue committee.

Former SYRIZA MP Petros Tatsopoulos and Democratic Left (DIMAR) lawmaker Grigoris Psarianos are expected to join the recently formed centrist party To Potami after being named among the 60 non-party members that will take part in a “committee for dialogue” set up by the new movement.

Stavros Theodorakis, the leader of centrist To Potami (The River) which has gained unexpected popularity among jaded voters in just a few months, appeared to draw broad interest from across the political spectrum at the party’s founding congress over the weekend.

To Potami, the centrist party formed by journalist Stavros Theodorakis, will hold its founding congress at the Technological Park in Lavrio, southeast of Athens, rather than a campsite in Thrace, northeastern Greece, as had been originally planned.

The congress will be held between June 27 and 29.

To Potami, the new centrist party that gained 6.6 percent in the European Parliament elections on Sunday, announced on Friday that it will hold its first party congress at a campsite in Thrace, northeastern Greece.

The party’s 6,800 members have been invited to book to attend the event, which will take place on the last weekend of June.
