European Parliament scandals with a Greek twist

Since the last European elections in 2019, 163 complaints have been lodged against MEPs for workplace harassment, fraud, nepotism, financing and, even espionage for Russia, according to Belgian newspaper La Libre in February.

Of the 21 Greek MEPs, at least five have dealt with the justice system and were investigated for criminal and non-criminal offenses.

Tension at Golden Dawn appeal hearing

A senior Golden Dawn member convicted over the 2013 murder of leftist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, among other crimes, was led away in handcuffs from Athens Appeals Court after hurling insults at Fyssas' mother.

Yiannis Lagos, a member of the European Parliament and among the party's highest cadres, said Magda Fyssa was a "professional" and told her to "f**k off."

Neo-Nazi MEP penalized for tearing up Turkish flag

The European Parliament has penalized a Greek neo-Nazi lawmaker who tore up a paper copy of the Turkish flag during a debate in the Brussels-based assembly last month.
Yiannis Lagos, an independent MEP, was on Tuesday ordered to pay a fine of 2,261 euros, which was said to be the equivalent of his weekly paycheck.
He was also banned from the assembly for four days.

Prosecutor seeks acquittal of GD officials over attack on Egyptian fishermen

Citing a more lenient criminal code passed by the previous government, one of the prosecutors in the ongoing trial against Golden Dawn has recommended the acquittal of two high-ranking officials in the neo-Nazi party in connection with the savage June 2012 attack on a group of Egyptian fishermen.
