Turkey hosted meetings with representatives of G-20 countries and the inaugural meeting of the B-20, the business branch of the G-20, on Dec. 15, the first such set of meetings since it became president of the G-20 at the start of the month.

After adopting a proposal to increase the duration of religious education schooling and recommend compulsory Ottoman language classes, a committee of Turkey’s National Education Council has accepted a proposal to abolish a class that teaches tourism students how to serve alcoholic beverages.

The national education council is set to discuss the introduction of religious courses to primary schools and kindergartens across Turkey, raising fresh concerns over the rise of religious conservatism in the country.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has heralded a new curriculum for schools, after complaining that Turkish students know foreign figures like Albert Einstein but not Muslim and Turkish ones.

“The state’s essence and raison d’etre is to maintain security for justice” said Haşim Kılıç, the president of Turkey’s Constitutional Court. “If that fails, political, economic and social crises become inevitable.”

Bad weather conditions have hit a number of provinces across Turkey, with many roads blocked by heavy snowfall.

Officials have warned that more snow is to come in six southeastern provinces, including Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Batman and Siirt, especially in towns at higher altitudes. They warned that citizens should be cautious.

An explosion occurred at a large laundry facility on an industrial site in the southern Turkish province of Antalya on the morning of Nov. 19.
     
Ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene. Ahmet Kısa, the president of the provincial fire department, has said the explosion left two people dead and wounded at least 13 others, with three in serious condition.
