The rally for the 42nd anniversary of the student uprise at the Athens Polytechnic ended peacefully in front of the U.S. Embassy at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, however hoodlums kept the “tradition” of burning Exarchia with attacks and other episodes noted in the central suburb that is a hub for anarchists.

The Athens Polytechnic Uprising is typically commemorated with scuffles. The day commemorates Greek students’ resistance against the military dictatorship. It marks the day that Greek tanks broke down the main gate of the Athens Polytechnic, killing students and marking the start of the end of the seven-year dictatorship that had begun on April 21, 1967.

Protesters torch trolley bus, clash with police in Athens

Around 40 hooded anti-establishment protesters threw petrol bombs and stones at riot police in central Athens on Saturday, setting fire to a trolley bus.

Police fired teargas to try and control the crowd outside Athens Polytechnic University, near the central Exarchia district, a Bohemian quarter popular with artists and left-wing intellectuals.

Police probe online footage that appears to show forced detention

Greek police launched an investigation on Monday into footage that was posted online showing a young man being forcibly detained by Delta officers in the neighborhood of Exarchia, central Athens.

The probe was ordered by Alternate Minister for Citizens? Protection Yiannis Panousis after the video appeared on the Internet last Friday.
