Greece Asked to Declare State of Emergency over Migrant Backlog

The Governor of a region in northern Greece is demanding that state of emergency be declared in the area around the Idomeni border crossing.

At least 13 000 people are stranded on the border between Macedonia and Greece, as Macedonian authorities are applying restrictions to the flow of migrants for several weeks, local and international media quoted him as saying.

New Democracy president Mitsotakis challenges PM Tsipras

Kyriakos Mitsotakis was elected president of main opposition New Democracy in runoff elections on Sunday defeating Vangelis Meimarakis.

Despite all the predictions, Mr. Mitsotakis managed to bring together New Democracy members by showing them that he wants to turn over a new leaf in party’s history and achieved a clear win against Vangelis Meimarakis.

Mitsotakis’s first statement as New Democracy leader

In his brief first statement as new president of the main opposition party New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that today is a great and historic day for New Democracy.

As he explained, voters gave a clear mandate to proceed to party’s renewal, while the party continues to be united. “Together we move forward leaving behind what divides us,” he said.

Countdown to ND leadership election day

The day for the election of the new leader of New Democracy is near with less than 24 hours until the polls open.

Tomorrow at 7am the polls open with two candidates fighting for ND leadership, Vangelis Meimarakis and Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Supporters of New Democracy will be able to cast their vote from 7am to 7pm on Sunday and until 11pm it is estimated to get clear result.

Tzitzikostas: I don’t support anyone, I don’t agree with transactions and party lines

Prefect of Central Macedonia Apostolos Tzitzikostas will give a press conference at noon and is expected to state that he won’t support anyone for the second round of the elections for New Democracy’s new leader.

“I don’t support anyone, I don’ t agree with transactions and party lines” Mr. Tzitzikostas will state in the press conference according to information.

President of the conservative New Democracy (ND) party announced the final results following a delay in the tallying procedure on account of isolated regions not having access to facsimile machines.

24 hours after the polls closed for the leadership elections held by the conservative New Democracy (ND) party on Sunday, central election committee (KEFE) chief Yiannis Tragakis announced the 85% of the results showing a clear lead for former ND interim leader Vangelis Meimarakis at 39.51%, followed with more than 10 units difference by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Apostolos Tzitzikostas at 21.15%

ND leadership election results: 11.24% difference between Meimarakis-Mitsotakis

Following the delay of one day, the official results of the December 20 leadership elections of the conservative main opposition New Democracy party were finally announced by the central electoral committee (KEFE).

The results from 1,062 voting centers of a total of 1,251 centers were announced 24 hours after the voting for 400,000 ND members ended.

Greece’s conservative main opposition New Democracy (ND) party failed to elect a party leader on Sunday, December 20. This means that a runoff vote is to take place on January 10 after former interim party leader Vangelis Meimarakis garnered most of the votes but not the absolute majority according to the party’s initial estimates as official results won’t be available until Monday afternoon.
