Colombia's ELN says it killed Russian hostage; risks peace talks with government

Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group said a Russian-Armenian citizen it held hostage for six months was killed in April while trying to escape, a startling admission that risks throwing current peace talks with the government into jeopardy.

BOGOTÁ, Colombia - Seven people were killed during two ambushes at the western and eastern edges of the Colombian jungle and the government has blamed the Army of National Liberation (ELN) while the rebels have placed the blame on right-wing paramilitary unit operating in the areas as the two sides attempt peace talks.

Five assailants who attacked riot unit in Kypseli being sought

Police on Monday were seeking the five assailants who attacked a riot police unit on Sunday night in the central Athens district of Kypseli, pelting them with stones and other objects.

The perpetrators fled immediately after the attack into surrounding streets.

There were no injuries. 

Police defuse hand grenade bomb found outside Dafni precinct

Police bomb disposal experts defused an explosive device comprising a hand grenade on Saturday after receiving an anonymous caller telephoned a threat that the bomb would detonate outside the police precinct in Dafni, southern Athens.

The bomb was found in a bag that had been placed in a small park behind the police precinct.
