Afghan anti-corruption body assails nepotism in government

An independent Afghan anti-corruption body says that nepotism plays a critical role in getting a job as a diplomat in the country's Foreign Affairs Ministry.

In a report released on June 3, the Independent Joint Anti-Corruption Monitoring and Evaluation Committee says favoritism and patronage often prevail over merit and ability in diplomatic appointments.

Hostage situation ends aboard passenger ferry, Kriti 2

A hostage situation aboard the passenger ferry, Kriti 2, on a route from Crete to Piraeus ended when the police stormed on board. Early reports showed that a passenger, aged 30, held a female hostage on board, threatening her with a broken glass.

The hostage-taker was monitored by the crew whereas the other passengers, roughly around 600 people, had been distanced from the scene.

Police confirm two arrested, one dead in raid to catch bank robbery suspects

Police confirmed on Saturday that they have arrested two men in a raid to catch the men suspected of carrying out 400,000-euro robbery last year. A third man died during the operation near Volos, central Greece.

According to officers, Spyros Christodoulou (45) and Grigoris Tsironis (37) were arrested but Spyros Dravilas (34) committed suicide to prevent being caught.
