Officials and citizens commemorated 81 sailors who tragically died after their TGC Dumlupınar submarine sank in the Dardanelles Strait in 1953 in the northwestern province of Çanakkale.

People flocked to the historical peninsula of Gallipoli ahead of the 104th-year anniversary ceremonies to be held today due to the Martyrs' Day and Çanakkale Victory.

Each year thousands of Australians, New Zealanders, British, Indian and French citizens visit Gallipoli to commemorate their ancestors who lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915. After the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915, the peace and friendship bridge established between Turkey, Australia and New Zealand strengthens.

Some 17,750 square meters of abandoned fishing nets have been removed from Turkish waters around the Dardanelles Strait and the islands of Bozcaada (or Tenedos) and Gökçeada (or Imbros) since 2016 as part of an Agriculture and Forestry Ministry project.

The US has begun making the necessary preparations to sail a warship into the Black Sea, a move that comes amid heightened tensions in the region following Russia's seizure of Ukrainian ships and detention of Ukrainian sailors.

This has been stated by the Commander of the Ukrainian Navy Igor Voronchenko.

"In line with the Montreal Convention and its paragraph 19, we will seek the closure of the Bosphorus in Turkey in order to force the Russians to understand what constitutes a violation of international law," Voronchenko said, according to TASS.

Turkish authorities have included eight rules to existing regulations to increase maritime safety in the Bosphorus and Çanakkale straits, one of the busiest and most challenging waterways of the world, Vatan newspaper reported on Sept. 3. 

A Russian warship heading to the Mediterranean waters passed through the Strait of Dardanelles in Turkey's west on May 23, Doğan News Agency reported.
