Office workers were forced to flee-high rise buildings in the capital while hundreds of people ran down the streets of downtown Jakarta when the quake struck.
Local TV showed patients being evacuated from a hospital in the capital.
Rudy Togatorop, 35, who works at the Chilean embassy, said: "We felt the earthquake for three to five minutes.

An Earthquake Shook the Capital of Taiwan
An earthquake rocked the Taiwanese capital of Taipei. The quake was 5.7 on the Richter scale and it's happened today, informs Reuters.
Witnesses of the natural phenomenon commented that buildings in the center of the city were slightly moving. There is no information about injured people or material damage.

Seismologists reassuring over Athens quake
Monday night's earthquake was felt as strongly as was in the Greek capital because it was very close by, 28 kilometers northeastern of the city center in Stamata, and was close to the surface at a depth of just 4 to 5 kilometers, seismologists say.

Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Fears in Peru
One man is confirmed dead and several people are injured following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in Peru.
The quake on Sunday initially sparked a tsunami warning for some coasts in Peru and neighbouring Chile, but this was quickly called off.
Its epicentre was in the Lomas district, in the southern region of Arequipa.

Mild quake hits central Greece
An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale shook the region of Tyrnavos, in central Greece, at 7.45 a.m. on Wednesday, according to reports.
The tremor's epicenter was located 25 kilometers northwest of Larissa, with assessments giving it a focal depth of 5 kilometers, according to the same reports.
There were no reports of damage or injuries.

A cluster of small tremors, with the biggest measuring just 2.7 on the Richer scale, was recorded in eastern Attica on Tuesday morning, though seismologists appear confident this is not a precursor to a bigger event.

An earthquake of magnitude 3 on the Richter scale is registered in the region of the village of Skrut, Municipality of Petrich.
The quake was at 14.32 hrs Bulgarian time, according to the site of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Quake felt in Serbia, Montenegro, Albania
BELGRADE - A strong, magnitude 5.3 earthquake on the Richter scale was registered in the tri-border area of Serbia, Montenegro and Albania on Thursday, and it was also felt in Belgrade, the Seismological Survey of Serbia told Tanjug.
The epicentre of the quake, which took place at 11.46 am, was in Montenegrin territory.
