Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) said early on April 2 it plans to ask the Supreme Election Council (YSK) to resolve a dispute over invalid votes in mayoral elections for Istanbul and Ankara.

The candidate of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in Turkey's largest city Istanbul is ahead in the vote count against the candidate of President Tayyip Erdogan's AKP, the head of the country's High Election Board said on April 1.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said the preliminary results of the March 31 local elections showed that his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) became the winner of the municipal elections "by a majority just like when our party came to power on Nov. 3, 2002."

The voters will choose from 12 political parties competing in the local elections.       

Greeks living abroad who wish to vote in the European Parliament elections in May have until April 5 to register on the Interior Ministry's special electoral roll after an extension was announced on Friday.
Applications for registration can be made on the Interior Ministry's website, www.ypes.gr, or in person at Greek embassies.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is smearing the opposition because they have nothing convincing to say amid financial troubles for the upcoming March 31 elections, main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has said.

The Parliament has restored the previous barrier in preferential voting, Focus News Agency reports. The threshold in preferential voting in local and general elections will be 7%, and that in European elections - 5%. Thus, the MPs revoked the higher thresholds adopted through amendments to the Electoral Code on February 14, 2019 that caused public discontent.
