European Parliament election in Romania

The USR PLUS Alliance reiterates the possibility of granting the investiture vote to a transitional minority government, but "only with the fulfillment of certain conditions", noting "the lack of political will to swiftly set off early elections".

The opposition Save Romania Union (USR) PLUS Alliance has suggested to President Klaus Iohannis, the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), the national minority group, Pro Romania and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) a pact on early election, USR national leader Dan Barna said on Monday at a news conference.

Pro Romania and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) lodged, on Sunday, with the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), the protocol for setting up the Electoral Alliance between the two parties in order to support the independent candidate Mircea Diaconu in the presidential elections. The protocol was submitted by the two co-chairs of the Alliance, Norica Nicolai and Sorin Cimpeanu.

"The prospect of having a second round presidential election between the PNL candidate and the USR-PLUS candidate would indicate that Romania is getting better.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila suggested to Dacian Ciolos, chairman of the PLUS (Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity, ed. n.) to make an analysis of his own activity as European Commissioner, after the leaders of USR (Save Romania Union, ed. n.) PLUS criticised the nominations by the ruling PSD (Social Democratic Party, ed. n.) for the European Commissioner job.

Spokesman of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) Varujan Vosganian said on Tuesday that the Alliance will "almost certainly" nominate its leader Calin Popescu-Tariceanu as presidential candidate.

National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman Ludovic Orban said on Tuesday that "it would have been better" if the USR-PLUS Alliance [formed by USR - Save Romania Union, PLUS - Freedom, Unity and Solidarity Party] did not nominate a candidate for the presidential election, explaining that this splits the votes in the fight against the Social Democratic Party (PSD, major at rule).

The more than 500 delegates to the congress of the Save Romania Union (USR) validated on Saturday the formation's Chairman Dan Barna as candidate for the presidential election this autumn. The other contenders for the USR presidential nomination were Mihai Gotiu, Dragos Dinulescu and Dumitru Stanca. Dan Barna received 324 votes, Mihai Gotiu - 134, Dumitru Stanca - 5, and Dragos Dinulescu - 3.
