Greek coast guard officers on Saturday intercepted 44 illegal migrants on a boat east of the northern Aegean island of Samothrace.

The 28-year-old man was detained over the weekend at the Kipi customs post in Evros, the northernmost part of Greece, after police foud parcels of bullets concealed in special caches in his car.    

A police patrol in northeastern Greece on Saturday rescued 69 migrants stranded on the Evros River, the natural boundary with Turkey, which is a popular crossing point into Europe.

The police used an inflatable dinghy to bring the undocumented immigrants ? 42 men, 10 women and 17 children ? to the shore.

About 4,000 hectares of agricultural produce has been destroyed by floods in the regional units of Evros and Serres over the last few days.

Local authorities on Monday said that a preliminary estimate of the damage reached 130 million euros, and asked the European Union?s Solidarity Fund to provide financial assistance.

Around 22,000 hectares of land on the banks of the rivers Evros, Ardas and Erythropotamos on the Greek-Bulgarian border has been flooded due to heavy rains last week and over the weekend, authorities said on Monday, with some 10,000 hectares of farmland suffering damage.

Dozens of residents were evacuated from villages in northeastern Greece on Friday after the Evros River broke its banks due to the high volume of water flowing from neighboring Bulgaria.

A 4-year-old Syrian girl was found sheltering from the cold beside her father's body by a farmer in northern Greece who was inspecting his water-pumping station, located some 300 meters from Evros River on the Greek-Turkish border, police reported on Friday.
