Minnesota Senate wavering on bill targeting female genital mutilation because immigrant groups oppose it

The Minnesota Senate version of a bill passed by the Minnesota House that would punish parents who subjected their daughters to female genital mutilation (FGM) is stalling in the Senate because some members of Minnesota’s immigrant and refugee communities oppose it.

Supreme Court orders probe into clitoridectomy claims

Greece's Supreme Court has ordered a probe into claims by a nongovernment organization that dozens of girls under the age of 15 living in migrant camps across the country have been subjected to clitoridectomy, a form of female genital mutilation.

The procedure is allegedly carried out by elderly women or unofficial imams in return for a fee.

200 million females estimated to be circumcised

The U.N. children’s agency estimates that at least 200 million girls and women in 30 countries have undergone female circumcision.

According to a statistical report released on Thursday by UNICEF, the global figure includes nearly 70 million more girls and women than estimated in 2014 due to population growth and new data received from Indonesia.

UN chief launches campaign to end female genital mutilation

UN chief Ban Ki-moon launched Oct. 30 a global campaign to end the often deadly practice of female genital mutilation within a generation, as survivors said it had "shattered" their lives.
      
"The mutilation of girls and women must stop in this generation, our generation," Ban said on a visit to the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
