Our national football squad played its first game on Oct. 26, 1923, exactly three days before the republic was declared. That team's coach was Ali Sami Yen, who was the founder of the Galatasaray football team. The captain of the team was a legendary player from Fenerbahçe, Hasan Kamil.

Galatasaray out to break Kadıköy jinx
Galatasaray wants to end a 17-year jinx when it travels to the Asian side of Istanbul for a Spor Toto Super League game on Nov. 20.
The club's last victory at the Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium was in 1999, when it beat Fenerbahçe 2-1 in a league game on Dec. 22, and has not been able to win in the 20 official games at the venue since.
