Third quake over 5-Richter magnitude rattles Lesvos

Seismologists in Greece are keeping a close eye on activity in the eastern Aegean, as a third quake in 24 hours measuring above 5 Richter rattled the area in the early hours of Tuesday.

The tremor hit at 4.24 a.m. and measured 5.3 on the Richter scale, according to the Geodynamic Institute in Athens, with the epicenter located 15 kilometers north of Lesvos.

A second strong quake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, shook Lesvos at 1 p.m. on Monday just a few hours after a 5.1-magnitude tremor hit the eastern Aegean island.

The epicenter of the second quake was located some 63 kilometers northwest of the island and at a depth of some 10 kilometers under the sea bed, according to seismologists.

A strong 5.1 magnitude tremor rocked the island of Lesvos a little after noon on Monday, after the 5.0 on the Richter scale that hit the island Sunday morning. The epicentre of both earthquakes was 63km northwest of the capital Mytilene. Two more tremors, 3.0 and 3.9, were felt between the two major ones.

A strong undersea quake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, occurred off the coast of Lesvos, in the southeastern Aegean, on Monday morning, unsettling residents but causing no injuries or major damage.

The quake, which struck north of Lesvos at 5.50 a.m., came in the wake of dozens of smaller tremors in the area over the past few weeks.

3.3 earthquake hits Lefkada

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake hit the Ionian island of Lefkada on the west coast of Greece, Friday. The tremor struck at a shallow depth of less than 5km with the epicentre 17km northwest of the island. No damage was reported, with seismologists disassociating it with the activity in central Italy.
