A total of 46,633 individuals who entered the country irregularly have been deported since the beginning of this year, Interior Minister Yerlikaya has informed.

In a recent statement posted on his social media account, he further stated that the deportation proceedings of an additional 17,964 foreigners are still ongoing.

The financing for the renewal of the term of office of 800 fixed-term border guards in the eastern Aegean has been decided by the managing authority of the Migration Ministry.

The move aims to strengthen the operational capacity of the Hellenic Police for the protection and surveillance of the country's external borders.

At least 78 people died and hundreds more are missing at sea, presumed dead, after a boat carrying migrants from Libya to Italy capsized in international waters south-west of Greece early on Wednesday.
