Trump meets with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov

U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the Syrian civil with Russia’s foreign minister in the Oval Office on Wednesday, at a time when alleged ties to Moscow are overshadowing the Republican’s administration.
The meeting with Sergei Lavrov was the highest-level public contact between Trump and the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin since Trump took office on Jan. 20.

Russia's Lavrov says he hopes Syria strikes won't irreparably hurt US ties

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on April 7 he hoped U.S. missile strikes on Syria would not irreparably damage relations between Moscow and Washington.

"This is an act of aggression, on an absolutely made-up pretext," Lavrov told a news conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. 

Berlin concerned over possibility of new arms race in Europe

German Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel, who is in Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, says that Germany fears a new arms race in Europe.

"We are concerned that a new spiral of the arms race may emerge in Europe," he said, as cited by TASS. "It's too early to say how and in what direction we could advance to prevent this."

Ukraine Blocks UN Statement on Churkin

Ukraine's decision to block the adoption by the UN Security Council of a statement dedicated to late Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin is "beyond good and evil," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a joint press conference with his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstroem following their meeting in Moscow on Tuesday, February 21.

New Ukraine truce due to come into force on Feb 20

A truce between government forces and pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine will come into force on Feb. 20, Moscow and Kiev said, though some separatists were already labelling it unfeasible.

The Feb. 18 announcement comes after nearly 30 people lost their lives as violence flared again earlier this month in a conflict that has left more than 10,000 people dead since April 2014.

Russia invites Trump officials to Syria talks, Lavrov says

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Jan. 17 that Moscow had invited representatives of the incoming U.S. administration to attend upcoming Syria talks in Kazakhstan.

Lavrov said at a news conference on Jan. 17 that Russia is encouraged by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's focus on combating terrorism.

Russia Plans to Expel 35 US Diplomats in Reciprocal Move

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has proposed to President Vladimir Putin the expulsion of 35 US diplomats posted to the country in retaliation to an earlier move by the US administration.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry has downplayed again allegations that Moscow orchestrated cyber attacks aimed at intefering in the US election, saying the claims "do not match reality".
