President appoints Marmara University rector as YÖK chair
The president of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), Prof. Dr. Yekta Saraç, became the chief adviser to the president upon the expiration of his term, while Marmara University Rector Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar has been appointed as a member and president of YÖK, according to a presidential decree published on the Official Gazette.
World-renowned historian Mehmet Genç dies at age 87
World-renowned Ottoman historian Mehmet Genç has passed away at the age of 87.
Genç, a retired professor of Marmara University, was receiving treatment for lung cancer.
Genç graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences in 1958.
Turkish coronavirus patient in Sudan brought to homeland
Turkey on May 5 repatriated one of its nationals who is suffering from the coronavirus but was unable to get treatment in Sudan.
Mehmet Hanefi Aydın, 55, was sent home from a hospital in Sudan although he tested positive for the virus.
Aydın returned from Khartoum via an ambulance plane after his children pleaded for help on social media.
60 percent of refugee children suffer from psychological problems
Sixty percent of refugee children in Turkey have at least one type of psychological illness, according to Dr. Veysi Çeri from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Department at Marmara University's Pendik Training and Education Hospital.

Some 22 people were detained on Nov. 17 at Istanbul’s Marmara University after a prosecutor issued warrants for a total of 42 university personnel as part of an investigation into the Gülen network, accused of masterminding last year’s failed coup.

Master photographer Sabit Kalfagil laid to rest
A master of Turkish photography, Professor Sabit Kalfagil, was laid to rest in Istanbul on May 6.
Kalfagil died in Istanbul's Haydapaşa Albdülhamit Research and Education Hospital on May 5 at the age of 83.
Among the attendees of his funeral ceremony were academics from Marmara University and many photography artists.
