Collecting Chrome, Albanian Women Face Exploitation

Vjollca Gjelleshi closed a difficult chapter six years ago when she decided to swap her hammer for a small business selling second-hand shoes.

Gjelleshi had spent 14 years working in the mines of her hometown, Bulqiza, in northeastern Albania, half of that time separating chrome from stone and loading it into buckets.

New deal signed with Eldorado Gold

The government signed on Friday a revised contract with Eldorado Gold Corporation, covering its mining operations in northern Greece, where it has faced repeated stalling over licensing delays and environmental concerns.

Eldorado has been in talks with the Greek government on a revised investment plan that would secure higher royalties from mining development and new jobs.

Six suitors likely to bid for Larco assets

Six candidates have expressed their interest in a tender to buy Larco General Mining & Metallurgical Company assets, including the leasing of the mining complex in Larymna.

According to information, the six candidates were: GEK Terna, Tharisa Plc, Mytilineos Group, Solway Investment Group, Trafigura Group Pte, and Commodity and Mining Insight Ireland Limited.

Turkey's industrial productivity rises in Q3

Turkey's industrial productivity increased by 2.84% year-on-year from July to September, the Industry and Technology Ministry said on Dec. 11. 

Calendar adjusted index of production per person employed stood at 114.09 in the third quarter of 2020, rising from 110.23 in the same period last year, according to official figures.

World's deepest gold mine shut down due to COVID-19

The coronavirus outbreak in South Africa has closed Mponeng, the world's deepest gold mine after 164 workers tested positive for the disease.

The global gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti said it conducted 650 tests since last Thursday, including primary contacts and many others who wished to be tested voluntarily.

Over 280 sites to be tendered for mining

The Turkish Energy and Natural Sources Ministry has decided to hold tenders to open 284 sites to mining, according to the Official Gazette.

The mentioned 284 mining sites were put out to tender previously, but the tenders were canceled because there was not adequate number of bidders, the decision of the General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs (MAPEG) said yesterday.

Blast in Germany: Dozens of People Have Been Blocked Underground, there Are Injured

Two people were injured in a blast in a mine near the eastern German city of Halle, the Associated Press reported, citing police sources and DPA.

It is estimated that about 35 people were left underground, but in a safe place.

The incident occurred in a former potassium carbonate (potash) mine, where only extractive waste is now stored.

CupruMin copper mining company of Abrud has recently sold 45,000 tonnes of copper concentrate at a tender, having been offered "the highest per tonne price ever," according to a press statement released on Thursday.
