The Turkish Government, in an unprecedented decree, announced the transfer of its most valuable financial and real assets into a wealth fund on Jan. 5. For any ordinary Turkish citizen, the "transfer of assets into a fund" sounds a bit shady.

Turkey has reopened its embassy in the Libyan capital after having closed the facility in 2014 due to the deterioration in security in the country. 

A car exploded on Jan. 21 in the Libyan capital near the Italian embassy killing two people who were inside the vehicle, security and medical sources said.

It was not immediately clear if the blast was accidental or an attack or whether the Italian embassy, which had reopened less than two weeks ago, was the target.

The European Union needs to reach a deal on curbing the flow of migrants trying to sail on smugglers' boats from Libya to Italy, the prime minister of Malta, holder of the EU's rotating presidency, said on Jan. 18. 

Hijackers claiming to have a grenade took over a Libyan plane Dec. 23 and diverted it to Malta before releasing everyone onboard and surrendering to authorities, officials said.

"Final crew members leaving aircraft with hijackers," Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said on Twitter.
Minutes later he added: "Hijackers surrendered, searched and taken in custody." 

At least seven people were killed and eight wounded when a suicide bomber targeted forces loyal to Libya's eastern government in Benghazi on Dec. 18, medical and security officials said. 

Turkey will soon reopen its embassy in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, a senior diplomat said Nov. 10. 

"Soon we will open our embassy in Tripoli and resume work," the undersecretary of the Turkish Embassy in Libya, Tufan Höbek, said Nov. 10.

BELGRADE - A Serbian national was kidnapped in Libya on Saturday, the Serbian Foreign Ministry told Tanjug on Tuesday.

The kidnapping of Miroslav Tomic (36) occurred at a site 120 km from the border with Egypt, the ministry said.
