Union of Centrists MP quits, stripping party of parliamentary group status

Centrists Union MP Giannis Saridis resigned on Thursday to become an independent after a long disagreement with the party over policy, stripping the party of its status as a parliamentary group.
The lawmaker announced his decision in a letter to Parliament President Nikos Voutsis.

Parliament appealed to ELAS twice before anarchist attack, documents show

Two classified documents sent by Parliament's security service to the leadership of the Greek Police (ELAS) last week, and seen by Kathimerini, appealed for improved policing outside the House, which was targeted by anarchist vandals who threw bottles of red paint at its facade on Tuesday.

Democracy tainted

Speaking of Tuesday's attack on the Parliament in Athens, House Speaker Nikos Voutsis said that the assault "offers nothing to social struggles." But the incident in which vandals threw paint at the front of the building, an attack which was claimed by the anti-establishment group Rouvikonas, had something to offer to some people.

Meimarakis gives up parliamentary seat ahead of EU vote

New Democracy lawmaker Evangelos Meimarakis has given up his parliamentary seat ahead of European Parliament elections in May.
In a letter to House speaker Nikos Voutsis Thursday, Meimarakis said he would not make use of a recent amendment which allows MEP candidates to retain their seats in the Greek parliament.
The seat will be filled by Zoi Rapti.
