Ernani opera on stage in Turkey 170 years on

Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi's "Ernani" opera, which was first staged in Turkey in 1846 at the Naum Theater by Italian artists, will be staged once again for the first time in 170 years. 
According to a statement issued by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, the first performance will be given on Nov. 26 at the Süreyya Opera Theater in Kadıköy,  

La Traviata | Athens | November 19-30

The Athens Concert Hall is hosting a Greek National Opera production of Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" in a series of performances on November 19, 20, 23, 25, 26, 27 and 30. The production is directed by Nikos Petropoulos. Alternating in the role of Violetta is Myrto Papatanasiu, Elena Mosuc and Maria Mitsopoulou. The company's orchestra is led by Lucas Karytinos.

Istanbul State Opera Ballet opens new season

The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (IDOB) has opened the 2016-2017 season with a concert that drew a large number of artists at the Süreyya Opera. 
Speaking about the new season, IDOB Director and Art Director Suat Arıkan said the theme of the new season would be "Firsts," noting that he chose the masterpieces of composers whose works had never been performed in Turkey. 

Tristan and Isolde | Athens | October 8

The Athens Concert Hall is hosting a live broadcast of Richard Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde" from New York's Metropolitan Opera on Saturday, October 8. The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra is led by Sir Simon Rattle while the cast features Nina Stemme (Isolde), Ekaterina Gubanova (Brangane), Stuart Skelton (Tristan), Evgeny Nikitin (Kurwenal) and Rene Pape (King Marke). With Greek subtitles.

GNO at SNFCC | Athens | September 25

Under the baton of Ilias Voudouris, the Greek National Opera's orchestra, choir and soloists perform excerpts from well-known operas, oratorios and music for ballet in the garden of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, on Sunday, September 25. On the evening's program are works by Wagner, Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. The concert is set to start at 8 p.m.

Number of opera, ballet halls falls

In the 2014-2015 season, as compared to the 2013-2014 season, the number of the opera and ballet halls in Turkey decreased by 26.7 percent, dropping to 11 total, while the number of seats in opera and ballet halls decreased by 37.8 percent to 6,398, according to the Operas, Ballets, Orchestras, Choirs and Groups 2015 statistics revealed by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜIK). 

Athens State Orchestra | Athens | May 6

The Athens Concert Hall is hosting the Athens State Orchestra in works by Petros Petridis, Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss on Friday, May 6. The performance is part of the ensemble's "On the Threshold of the 20th Century" series. German cellist Gabriel Schwabe, viola soloist Paris Anastasiadis and the ERT Choir will be joining the orchestra on stage.

Elektra | Athens | May 7

The Athens Concert Hall will screen a recorded broadcast of Richard Strauss's "Elektra" from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on Saturday, May 7. The opera is directed by French director Patrice Chereau and features Nina Stemme as Elektra, Waltraud Meier as Clytemnestra, Adrianne Pieczonka as Chrysothemis, Burkhard Ulrich as Aegisthus and Eric Owens as Orestes.
