Shusha Declaration

The already difficult US-Turkey relationship has entered an even more delicate phase with the cancellation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Washington. 

The visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Greece echoes the ongoing detente in Greek-Turkish relations. This year has been characterized by some stability as tensions are much lower in comparison to the past. Both countries and their peoples benefit from this situation.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has urged Armenia not to fall for the provocations from the third countries or from the Armenian diaspora, reiterating his call for peace and stability in the South Caucasus.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Emir Abdullahiyan, in Tehran on Sept. 3 to discuss a range of bilateral and international issues.

Fidan's visit to Iran marked his first official trip to the country since assuming the position of top diplomat.

Turkish president Recep Tattip Erdoğan on May 28 stressed Turkey and Azerbaijan's "strategic alliance" as cemented by last year's declaration in the wake of Azerbaijan's victory in a regional war with Armenia.

Turkey on Nov. 8 marked the anniversary of Azerbaijan's victory in Karabakh, expressing everlasting solidarity with the brotherly country.

"We are celebrating the victory of Azerbaijan's 44-day Patriotic War, which was crowned by liberation of the cultural capital of ancient Shusha on November 8 last year," said a Foreign Ministry statement.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will head to Azerbaijan on Oct. 26, his third visit since the liberation of the Karabakh region last November.

Erdoğan will meet his counterpart Ilham Aliyev and attend the inauguration of the Fuzuli International Airport.

Rumors of a breakthrough in Turkish-Armenian relations have no basis in fact. Turkey and Armenia cannot undertake a normalization of their relations without including Azerbaijan. Stability and security in the South Caucasus require a three-way dialogue between Turkey-Armenia-Azerbaijan and for Armenia to give up its fantasies of a Greater Armenia.
