A giant winter “bomb cyclone” has walloped the U.S. East Coast with heavy snow and freezing cold that made for treacherous travel conditions and bone-chilling misery.

The United States remains in the grip of winter. Warnings of heavy snow storms have been issued for the southeastern parts of the country - from Virginia to Maine.

Today it will be mostly cloudy with snow and rainfall mainly in Western and Central Bulgaria, snow in the high fields and the Pre-Balkan region and rain in the rest of the regions. No significant snow or rainfall is expected, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) told FOCUS News Agency. There will be light to moderate northwestern wind.

The astronomical winter will arrive in Bulgaria in the evening of Saturday, December 21, at 7:11 pm.

The time of the local arrival was announced by the Institute for Astronomy and the National Astronomical Lab on peak Rozhen at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS.

Snowfalls will resume and increase today, mainly in the southern half of Bulgaria. It will be mostly cloudy. It will snow in many areas. Only in the remote southeastern regions, it will initially rain, but the rain there will also transform into snow later.

Brussels Airport Zaventem stopped working today because of heavy snowfall. No take-off and landing of planes are currently in service, the airport said, BNT reports. 

Several hundred Romanians were blocked on Sunday at London Luton Airport due to unfavorable weather conditions, Romanian newspapers reported today.

Since British airports do not have snowmobiles, relying on the fact that on the archipelago is expected rain and not snow, several snowflakes have created chaos in air traffic, according to Romania Libera.
