Turkish farmers happy with snowfall

Turkey's crop producers are happy with the snowfall across the country as long-anticipated precipitation arrived early January, the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB) president has said.

According to ?emsi Bayraktar, the snow and rain throughout the country is expected to have a good impact on the winter drought, which was feared to damage newly-planted crops.

Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service Warns of Considerable Avalanche Risk

Bulgaria's Mountain Rescue Service has warned of considerable danger of avalanches following more than 24 hours of snowfall.

Trekking or skiing along eastern and northeastern mountain slopes could be particularly dangerous.

The fresh snow is about 30 cm thick but in areas with strong winds the snow cover could be considerably higher.

Blizzards Cause Spike in Accidents in Kosovo

At least 109 road accidents have been reported in Kosovo in only the first 24 hours of bad weather - with heavy snow and high winds to blame, the police said on Monday.

Temperatures have dropped as low as -10 degrees Celsius in some places. No deaths have been reported but the number of injured amounts to about 20.

Many vehicles got stuck in Athens – Thessaloniki highway at Raches, Phthiotis since the road has been blocked due to snow, as readers of protothema.gr mentioned.

Greek authorities finally managed to restore the flow of traffic putting an end to the ordeal of hundreds of families which were trapped at the national highway.

Snowfall paralyzes life in Istanbul

Heavy snowfall ahead of New Year's has paralyzed life in Istanbul as some flights and ferries were canceled, metrobuses were delayed and side roads remained inaccessible despite continued traffic on the city's main roads. 

Turkish Airlines and low-cost Turkish carrier Pegasus canceled 221 flights scheduled for Dec. 31, 2015, and Jan. 1, 2016, due to the snow storm.
