Kurdish fighters have reportedly expelled the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadists from the Syrian border town of Kobane after more than four months of fighting, while Iraqi forces announced landmark gains in the eastern Iraqi province of Diyala.

4 killed as rockets rain down on Syrian capital: monitor
Four civilians were killed and dozens wounded when rebels fired a barrage of rockets and mortar rounds Jan. 25 at central Damascus, a monitoring group said.
The rebel attack came two days after they threatened to retaliate for deadly air raids by the Syrian regime against an opposition-held area on the edge of the capital.
US training 3,600 in Iraq but Syrian forces need more time
The Pentagon confirmed Jan. 23 that it has begun training 3,600 Iraqi and Kurdish forces, but has yet to begin recruiting and actively vetting their Syrian counterparts.
In Iraq, the U.S. and coalition partners have begun training forces at four sites across the country, including al-Assad, Camp Taji in Baghdad Governorate, Bismaya and Erbil.
New UN program sends 54 convoys to Syria
The United Nations says it has carried out 54 aid deliveries to Syrians through newly-authorized convoys from neighboring countries since July, helping around 600,000 people in rebel-held territory.
The latest monthly report on the humanitarian situation in Syria will be discussed Jan. 28 at a UN Security Council meeting.

UK praises Turkey's efforts to stem flow of foreign fighters
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has praised Turkey?s efforts to stop the flow of foreign fighters traveling to join Islamist militants in Iraq and Syria, amid mounting pressure on the country to do more about the issue.
