Turkey's main opposition leader urges gov't to change Syria policy

The leader of the main opposition Republican People?s Party (CHP) has said Ankara?s Syria policy must change, stating that Turkey must no longer be a route for foreign fighters.

Ankara?s regional policy should remain at an equal distance from all religions and sects in the Middle East, CHP head Kemal K?l?çdaro?lu said at the fifth Istanbul Forum in Istanbul on Jan. 19.

Iran confirms general killed in Israel strike on Syria

Iran confirmed Jan.19 that a general of its elite Revolutionary Guards died in an Israeli strike on Syria that also killed six members of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
      
"General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi and a number of fighters and Islamic Resistance (Hezbollah) forces were attacked by the Zionist regime's helicopters," said a statement on the Guards' website.

Israel Strikes Golan Heights, Kills Hezbollah Members

Israel carried out an air strike in the Syrian sector of the Golan Heights on Sunday, killing six members of Hezbollah.

Among the victims is the son of Hezbollah's late military leader, a current commander and at least one Iranian, the BBC reports.

The members of the Lebanese movement were killed while completing a reconnaissance mission in the Syrian province of Quneitra.

18 dead as Kurds battle regime forces in Syria city

At least 18 people have been killed in unprecedented fighting between Kurdish forces and Syrian government troops in the northeastern city of Hasakeh, a monitoring group said Jan. 18.
     
The clashes, which erupted in the early hours of Saturday, were continuing for a second day, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
      

35 Syrian soldiers killed in plane crash: monitor

At least 35 Syrian soldiers were killed overnight when an army cargo plane crashed in bad weather in the northwest of the country, a monitor said on Jan. 18.
      
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the plane crashed after hitting electricity lines in heavy fog in Idlib province, a claim echoed by Syrian state media.

A South Korean has gone missing in Turkey near the border with Syria, a foreign ministry official said Saturday, following reports that the man had joined the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
      
"The man disappeared on January 10 after he left a hotel" in the southern Turkish town of Kilis near the border with Syria, the official told AFP.
