Kaili to seek to return to MEP duties, lawyer says

Greek MEP Eva Kaili, one the main suspects in a cash-for-influence corruption probe at the European Parliament, will seek to return to her parliamentary duties next week, her lawyer has said.

On Thursday, Belgian authorities announced that Kaili was no longer under house arrest and was not required to wear an ankle bracelet.

MEP Kaili to remain in prison

A Belgian court has rejected an application from Greek MEP Eva Kaili to be released from pre-trial custody, following a hearing before the Court of First Instance in Brussels.

She can appeal the decision to keep her detained, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Detained MEP meets daughter

MEP Eva Kaili, who has been detained in Belgium over her alleged role in the Qatargate scandal, met with her two-year-old daughter on Friday.

At 5.20 p.m. Alexandros Kailis, the father of Eva, accompanied the child on her visit to the Haren Prison near Brussels.

The defense team of Kaili had asked the Belgian authorities to meet with her daughter, something they accepted.

The main article of French daily Le Soir focuses on the Belgian MEP Marie Arena, in the investigation it is conducting on Qatargate. The MEP who belongs to the Socialist group has been in the press on other occasions for her possible involvement in the Qatargate scandal, however she is not included among the MEPs for whom the lifting of immunity was requested.
