A Turkish scientist famous for his work on human brain has been awarded the 15th Vehbi Koç Award, a prestigious award that is granted to individuals and organizations annually by the Vehbi Koç Foundation in honor of the Koç Group's founder.

The tragic death on Jan. 21 of leading businessman Mustafa Koç at the age of 55 shocked almost everyone in Turkey, regardless of their social or economic position. Indeed, Koç and members of his family managed to affect many lives in the country, directly or indirectly, over the years.

When he passed away after a heart attack on Jan. 21 at the age of 55, Mustafa Koç was head of the top industrial group in Turkey. Koç Holdings, the only entry from Turkey in Fortune's Top 500, represents nearly 10 percent of the country's GDP, 14 percent of its total exports (45 percent of the country's total automotive exports) and employs more than 80,000 people.

Turkey's leading businesspeople and politicians made a rare show of unity on Jan. 24 to turn out in force at the funeral of the chairman of Turkey's largest industrial conglomerate, Mustafa Koç, who died last week aged only 55. 
  

Mustafa Koç, the chairman of Turkey's largest conglomerate, died of a heart attack on Jan. 21, the Vehbi Koç Foundation American Hospital in Istanbul has announced. 

He had been brought to Istanbul's Beykoz State Hospital on the morning of Jan. 21.

He was hospitalized to Istanbul's Beykoz State Hospital and his condition reported to be critical.

Koç was later transferred to the Vehbi Koç Foundation American Hospital (Amerikan Hastanesi), which he owns, by helicopter.

The Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TÜSEV) was founded 23 years ago by more than two dozen non-governmental organizations and some of Turkey's prominent foundations like Sabanc?, Vehbi Koç and the Turkish Foundation for Combatting Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats (TEMA).
