Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces "liberated dozens of settlements" and regained 1,000 square km of territory in the east and south since September 1.
In his speech on Thursday, Zelensky also released a video in which Ukrainian soldiers claim to have captured the town of Balakliia near Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, Reuters reports.

Ukraine on Thursday claimed a military breakthrough in its counter-offensive against Russian invaders as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on a surprise visit to Kiev, unveiled another $2.8 billion in military aid.

It is part of the documentary film "One President, Europe and War" that was broadcast on French television on June 30, and on the video you can see Emmanuel Macron talking to Volodymyr Zelensky via video call, visibly worried about what he is hearing, reports Euronews Serbia.
"You want to tell me that they sent special forces all over Kyiv?", Macron asked Zelensky.
Zelensky says Ukraine forces recaptured places near Kharkiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that Kiev troops have recaptured from Russian forces several settlements in the Kharkiv region in the country's northeast.
"This week we have good news from Kharkiv region," Zelensky said in his daily address, adding that "now is not the right time to name those settlements, where the Ukrainian flag has returned".
"Zelensky sent people to imminent death"
The counter-offensive on the Kherson region, which failed, was directed by Volodymyr Zelensky himself, said the deputy of the regional administration, Kirill Stremousov.
He added that for the sake of his PR and sending reports to Western sponsors, he sent people to imminent death.
