The number of people killed in twin car bombings in the Somali capital Mogadishu, claimed by Al-Shabaab Islamists, has risen to 100, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Sunday.

"So far, the number of people who died has reached 100 and 300 are wounded, and the number for both the death and wounded continues to increase," he said after visiting the blast location.

Somalis anxiously waited to know the fate of their missing relatives on Sunday as emergency workers attempted to clear debris after a deadly 30-hour siege by Al-Shabaab jihadists at a hotel in the capital Mogadishu.

Turkey on April 3 strongly condemned deadly terror attacks in Somalia.

"We are saddened to receive the news that many soldiers and civilians lost their lives in Somalia today [April 3] in the terrorist attacks targeting the Somali National Army troops and innocent civilians," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

A governor in Somalia's Puntland has been killed in a suicide bombing claimed by the Al-Shabaab jihadist group, AFP reported on March 30.

Abdisalan Hassan Hersi, governor of Nugaal region, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to hospital in Garowe, the capital of Puntland where the blast occurred on March 29.    

A car bomb exploded at a checkpoint in Somalia's capital on Jan. 8 morning, killing three people and wounding six others, a local official said. The al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group quickly claimed responsibility.

Al-Shabab extremists overran a key military base used by U.S. counterterror forces in Kenya before dawn on Jan. 5, killing three American Department of Defense personnel and destroying several U.S. aircraft and vehicles before they were repelled, U.S. and Kenyan authorities said.

A Turkish military plane on Dec. 29 evacuated 16 gravely wounded victims of a devastating bombing that killed 79 people and overwhelmed local health services, in the latest attack on a city dogged by insecurity.

The explosion occurred early this morning.

Fifteen people have died in an Islamist attack on an upmarket hotel complex in Nairobi, Kenyan police sources said Wednesday, as fresh explosions and gunfire rang out in the siege which stretched into its second day, reports AFP.
