One person was killed and seven injured Friday when a cable car pod in southern Turkey hit a pole and burst open, sending the passengers plummeting to the mountainside below, officials and local media said. Scores of other people were left stranded late into the night after the entire cable car system came to a standstill.

The World Bank has increased its support for Türkiye from $17 billion to $35 billion, providing an additional $18 billion of resources for the next three years, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek has said.

Erdogan made the comment during a visit to Azerbaijan at the start of his third term in office following presidential elections last month.

The third candidate, nationalist Sinan Ogan, received a surprising 5.2 per cent of the votes.

The results show that the incumbent president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, won 49.39 percent of the votes, and his main rival, Kemal Kılıdaroğlu, won 45 percent, Anadolu Agency reported.
