Türkiye is gearing up for local elections that will shape the country's administrative landscape for the next five years, with more than 61 million voters expected to head to the polls on March 31.

The Greek government has announced that it will submit to Parliament a series of bills ahead of the general elections, whenever they are held.

Millions of voters in Turkey will head to polling stations on Sunday to elect metropolitan municipality and district mayors, neighborhood heads, and provincial and district councils after tense and long election campaigns by two alliances set to race again after last year's presidential and parliamentary elections.

The mayors of small settlements insist that they be elected by direct choice rather than being appointed as they are now. Now mayors are elected only in places with a population of more than 350 people, and in the smaller ones they are appointed. The Chairman of the Association of Mayors of Town Halls and Mayor's Deputies Rumen Stoyanov explained:

Former president of the municipal assembly of the eastern town of Zajecar Sasa Mirkovic has been detained on suspicion of having abused that official position.

RTS is reporting that Mirkovic - who is also a show business manager - allegedly committed financial transgressions while serving as mayor, and previously as cabinet chief to the mayor.
