Municipal official, civil engineer caught for bribery

A municipal urban planning official and a civil engineer were arrested in Attica over the weekend on bribery charges, police said.

The arrests were made following a complaint lodged by a 47-year-old business owner with the police.

According to the woman, the municipal official, 48, had asked for 1,100 euros to settle a violation of building regulations that landed her with an unspecified administrative fine. The municipal official allegedly told her that part of the money would go to a 58-year-old civil engineer, described by him as an associate, who would help erase the fines.

Police said they arrested the 48-year-old taking the 1,100 euros in marked bills at the woman's store. The civil engineer was also arrested at his office, police said.
