Pahor in Rome for meeting of 15 presidents

Rome – President Borut Pahor will attend in Rome on Wednesday a meeting with the heads of state of 15 EU countries as part of the Arraiolos initiative, to discuss the tackling of the social and economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and the future of Europe.

The host, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, has also invited the presidents of Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Croatia Ireland, Latvia, Hungary, Malta, Germany, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia for the meeting.

The office of the Slovenian president said that the main topic would be the future of Europe in a post-pandemic world.

The participants of today’s meeting are among the signatories of a letter that on the occasion of Europe Day called for cooperation in creating a new European future.

The letter signed by representatives of 21 European countries had been drafted on initiative of the Slovenian and Italian presidents.

Pahor will exchange viewpoints of topical international issues with the heads of state, and hold bilateral meetings.

The informal platform bringing together presidents of the EU member states was created in 2003 on initiative of the then Portuguese president, with the idea to meet once a year in one of the participating countries.

Slovenia has been represented in the Arraiolos group since 2011.
