Janša to take part in CEI summit Friday

Ljubljana – Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša will take part virtually in the summit of the Central European Initiative (CEI) held in Budva under Montenegro’s presidency. The main topic of the meeting will be EU enlargement and boosting cooperation with East European CEI countries, Janša’s office said.

The summit, hosted by Montenegrin Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić, will also discuss response to topical challenges of sustainable development, international scientific cooperation, the region’s economy post Covid-19 pandemic and the future of the CEI’s action within the given financial framework.

Apart from representatives of CEI member countries, the summit is also expected to be attended by representatives of the European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

According to his office, Janša will discuss the importance of including the Western Balkans in the EU and the need to enhance the bloc’s cooperation with Eastern Partnership countries. Like most other CEI leaders he will take part by audio and video link.

The CEI is a regional forum promoting cooperation and partnership between the countries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in areas such as politics, business, culture, science and tourism. It also seeks to support the CEI countries that are not yet EU members in their accession process.

Established in Budapest in 1989, the initiative comprises Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Italy, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia ad Ukraine.
