Egypt slams Turkish criticism of mass death sentences

Egypt's Foreign Ministry has hit back at Turkish criticism of mass death sentences ruled by an Egyptian court against 183 people for engaging in deadly violence two years ago.

In a statement headlined "Egypt denounces Turkish nonsense," the ministry said yesterday that the Turkish Foreign Ministry had not "considered the feelings of the martyrs' families and their right to justice."

An Egyptian court on Feb. 2 confirmed death sentences against 183 men convicted of killing 13 police officers in a town near Cairo in August 2013.
      
In December the court had issued its preliminary verdict against 188 defendants in a mass trial, of which two were acquitted on Monday while one was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
      

Mubarak's sons released from Egypt prison: prison officials

The sons of deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak were released from prison on Jan. 26, prison officials said, a day after the violent anniversary of the 2011 uprising that toppled the autocrat.
   
An Egyptian court last week ordered the release of Alaa and Gamal Mubarak pending their retrial in a corruption case.
   

Egypt brands jihadist ISIL a 'terrorist group'

An Egyptian court on Nov. 30 branded the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) operating in Iraq and Syria a "terrorist" organization, the official news agency MENA reported.
      
An Egyptian militant group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to ISIL earlier in November, has itself also been designated a terrorist organisation under a similar ruling.
