Fanny Ardant’s ‘Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk’ opens in Athens

Award-winning French actress Fanny Ardant directs the Greek National Opera in an ambitious and unconventional production of Dmitri Shostakovich's 'Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,' which opened at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens on Sunday. Based on a novel by Nikolai Leskov, the opera explores a woman's place in provincial pre-revolutionary Russia.

The Frogs | Athens | May 3 & 4

The eccentric Opera Chaotique duo and the renowned Berlin-based Merlin Puppet Theater join forces at the Greek National Opera's Alternative Stage in a subversive reworking of Aristophanes' comedy "The Frogs," for two final performances on Friday and Saturday. In this reworking, Dionysus meets Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Bukowski, Artur Rimbaud and the spirit of Tom Waits.

Based on the novel by Nikolai Leskov, the opera addresses the subject of a woman's position in provincial pre-revolutionary Russia.

Miracles from the Bible | Athens | April 23

Continuing its Sacred Music cycle in the runup to Easter, the Greek National Opera presents "Miracles from the Bible," a program comprising Benjamin Britten's "Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac," Arvo Part's "Sarah Was Ninety Years Old" and Michalis Adamis' "Yini Perivevlimeni ton Ilion I" (A Woman Clothed with the Sun).

Dance Day | Athens | April 21

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) and the Greek National Opera celebrate International Dance Day on April 29 early with an all-day program of events dedicated to this wonderful art form. Performances, parties and classes will cover the range of genres, from tap, tango and breakdance to Greek folk dances. The admission-free event starts at 10 a.m.

Hadjidakis in Film | Athens | March 1 & 2

The Greek National Opera presents two movie suites by Manos Hadjidakis at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on March 1 and 2. The first is the "The Martlet's Tale," a soundtrack penned by the great Greek composer for the 1970 film of the same title directed by John Crowther, which received such poor reviews at its San Francisco preview that it was never released.
