Turkish minister says new encrypted phones for high-ranking officials to be put to use in 2016

Phones used by top government officials are to be changed by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜB?TAK) after top officials suffered illegal wiretapping, Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri I??k stated on Feb. 18.

Istanbul court arrests 17 policemen in espionage probe

An Istanbul court late Feb. 14 ordered the arrest of 17 of 21 police officers detained with charges of illegal wiretapping and espionage.

The officers were accused of being members an organization, engaging in espionage and attempting to topple the Turkish government.    

The judge released four other officers, but they were banned from leaving the country.

Prosecutor describes Gülenist police as terror organization

A Turkish prosecutor has described the ?parallel structure? led by U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen as an ?armed terror organization,? citing the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) case, in which allegedly Gülenist police and judiciary members had cracked down on army officers with the same accusation.

Turkey climbs in global press freedom index, but warned about poor record

Turkey has ranked 149th out of 180 countries in Reporters Without Borders' world press freedom index, climbing five places in one year due to the release of a number of journalists, despite mounting criticism against the government's approach to freedom of expression and the media.
