Kaminis and Boutaris hold seats but other key municipalities change hands

Giorgos Kaminis and Yiannis Boutaris retained the mayorships of Athens and Thessaloniki in the second round of local elections on Sunday but there were changes in key Greek cities.

Patra, Greece’s third largest city, was won by Communist Party candidate Costas Peletidis. In Iraklio, Crete, independent hopeful Vassilis Lambrinos beat PASOK-backed incumbent Yiannis Kourakis.

The Brazilian-born amateur Santos called up for the World Cup

In his swan song on the Greece bench, the 2014 World Cup, Portuguese manager Fernando Santos has chosen to add his personal touch to the squad that will travel to Brazil next month: He has added a Brazilian-born Greek amateur player to his 23-man squad, showing how much he appreciates local knowledge.

Greek Olympic medalist Anna Pollatou killed in car crash

Greek gymnast Anna Pollatou, who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, was killed in a car crash on Saturday, local media reported.

According to reports the 30-year-old, from the island of Kefalonia, died when her vehicle was involved in a collision with a pick-up truck on the road from Patra to Pyrgos in the Western Peloponnese.

Samaras gears up to present growth plan on Friday


Prime Minister Antonis Samaras continued an election road trip that will take him around the country with a visit to the island of Lesvos on Tuesday but the campaign for the local and European Parliament elections is expected to peak on Friday when he is due to set out his growth plan, also known as Greece 2021.
