Three police officers were killed on Jan. 16 in an outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) bomb attack targeting an armored police vehicle in the Sur district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır, the Diyarbakır Governor's Office has announced.

The total number of the "neutralized" militants in northern Syria since the ongoing Turkey-led Operation Euphrates Shield was launched last Aug., is at least 2,085, according to the latest data of the Turkish military. 

1,775 of these neutralized are ISIL militants, the weekly statement of the Turkish general staff said. 

A prosecutor in the southeastern Turkish province of Şırnak has sought an aggravated life sentence for Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Ferhat Encü over "attempting to kill a public official due to the public duty he is carrying out."

Two soldiers were killed on Jan. 6 during an operation against outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in the southeastern province of Şırnak, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Four other soldiers were also wounded during the operation conducted against the militants at the Gabar mountain, the agency said.

Turkey's opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Leyla Birlik, who was arrested earlier in the southeastern  province of Şırnak was released on Jan. 4, according to judicial sources.

A trustee was appointed to the Yüksekova Municipality in the southeastern Hakkari province on Dec. 19, after the elected Deputy Mayor Adile Kozay was arrested on Dec. 8 on charges of being a "member of a terrorist organization." 

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Dec. 15 decided to prioritize 34 applications made on behalf of 160 people from Turkey over the their complaints about alleged unlawfulness committed during round-the-clock curfews imposed in southeastern and eastern provinces after August 2015.

Turkey has obtained information about two Czech citizens who were caught illegally crossing the Turkish border into Iraq, and are suspected to have links to the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG), Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said in a joint press conference with his Czech counterpart, Lubomir Zaoralek, on Dec. 13.

Two children were wounded due to the explosion of a hand-made and pipe-type bomb in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on Dec. 4, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

The explosion occurred after a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old played with an object they found on the street in the İskenderpaşa neighborhood of Diyarbakır's central Sur district.

Nineteen outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants were "neutralized" in aerial and land operations carried out by the Turkish military in the provinces of Tunceli, Şırnak, Diyarbakır and Mardin, as the army prepared to "inflict a major blow" against the group this winter, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu has said.
