Flash floods which have swept through towns in the Turkish Black Sea region have killed 27 people, the country's emergency management agency said on Aug. 13, in the second natural disaster to strike Turkey this month.

New season excavations have started in the ancient city of Pompeiopolis in the Taşköprü district of the northern province of Kastamonu.

New heavy rainfalls are expected in six northeastern provinces hit by flood last week and a new heat wave will scorch Istanbul and the Marmara region next week, a meteorologist has warned.

"Apart from the eastern part of the Black Sea region, there will be no precipitation across the country," Orhan Şen said on the private broadcaster CNN Türk on July 28.

Almost a month after authorities launched a massive cleaning campaign, no trace of marine mucilage was detected in the north of the Bosphorus Strait, which is the entry point of the upper current coming from the Black Sea.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service has declared a yellow warning for 22 provinces, including Istanbul and Ankara, for heavy rains expected this week while calling on people to take precautions.

Fish stocks in the Black Sea are dwindling and commercial fishing is causing more and more environmental damage, causing concern that has grabbed the attention of NGOs and EU lawmakers.
