Mount Athos monastic community calls for referendum on FYROM name deal
The Holy Community of Mount Athos, which represents a cluster of historic monasteries and one of Orthodoxy's holiest sites in Halkidiki, northern Greece, has called on the left-led government to hold a referendum on the contentious name deal.
Farmer killed in tractor accident in Halkidiki
A 58-year-old man who had gone missing since October 30 in a region of the Sithonia peninsula in Halkidiki, northern Greece, was found dead on Thursday.
According to police, the man was fatally injured when the tractor he was operating overturned at a rural road near the village of Metagitsi.
The family of the farmer had alerted authorities on his disappearance on Tuesday.

Three beach deaths reported in two days
Three beachgoers died at sea on Tuesday and Monday in Attica, Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, authorities said.
More specifically, the body of a 76-year-old woman was recovered early on Tuesday morning in the coastal area of Rafina in eastern Attica.
On Monday afternoon, the body of a man was found in the sea off a beach in Peraia in Thessaloniki.

Russian national found dead in Toroneos Gulf
A 47-year-old Russian national who went missing on Thursday in the region of Aghios Mamas, near Nea Moudania in Halkidiki, northern Greece, was found dead on Friday, according to authorities.
His friends reported his disappearance after he did not return from the beach on Thursday.

Employee charged in Hellenic Post embezzlement
A Hellenic Post employee in Halkidiki, northern Greece has been charged with forgery and embezzling 300,000 euros from two branches in the 2012-14 period.
The suspect embezzled funds, pensions and remittances while he was working at the post office branches in Kallikrateia and Kassandreia.
He was expected to appear before an investigative magistrate on July 4.

Lightning sparks wildfires in northern Greece
Lightning sparked three wildfires in remote parts of the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the fire service.
Ground and air crews were battling blazes in the uplands of Kavourotrypes and Vourvourou on the Sithonia leg of the peninsula on Tuesday morning, after putting out another fire in Afytos on the Cassandra leg earlier.
