Corfu: Fire broke out on ferry sailing to Italy – Passengers evacuated on lifeboats

The rescue operation of the passengers of the Italian-flagged ferry, Euroferry Olympia, is underway, which - while sailing from Igoumenitsa (Greece) to Brindisi (Italy) - caught fire northeast of the island of Corfu.

There were 237 passengers and 51 crew member on board.

A fire broke out this morning on a ferry carrying 288 people on board, sailing from Greece to Italy, the Greek Coast Guard said, world news agencies and Greek media reported.

The ship "Euroferi Olympia" sailed from the Greek port of Igoumenitsa to the Italian city of Brindisi. The fire broke out off the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea.

Greek Kathimerini reports that the passengers have been evacuated and are already in lifeboats, and for now there is no information on whether anyone was injured.
