The risks and potential threats to Bulgaria's energy security stem from the country's high dependence on a natural gas supplier.

Elinoil is attempting to turn the crisis in the fuel market into an opportunity through a strategy to transform itself into an integrated energy group, selling electricity and natural gas too, it announced on Tuesday.

Greece's National Electricity Company warns of the possibility of the country falling into an energy crisis, as in December last year, when large consumption has triggered a sharp shortage of electricity, Greek electronic publications reported.

Turkey's energy consumption has seen a sharp increase since 2003, hitting $40 billion annually with an average growth of 5 percent in the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The demand for electricity has also grown at around 5 percent annually for the last 16 years.

Skyrocketing demand is, however, mainly being met by imported crude oil and natural gas.
