Conservative party of Greek prime minister in big election lead, to seek outright majority

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose conservative party scored a landslide election victory Sunday but without the seats in Parliament to win outright, indicated he will seek a second election in a bid to consolidate victory without a coalition partner.

PM, Tsipras agree on TV debate for second ballot

The first agreement was reached on Monday by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras for a one-on-one debate in view of the second election, in case the polls of May 21 do not produce a government.

"In the next election, because there is indeed a bonus, of course there should be a debate," the ruling New Democracy president told ANT1 TV.

Opinion polls have bad news for all

As the election campaign heats up, political parties are poring over opinion polls, those made public and those privately commissioned, to calibrate their tactics.

Each party, and this includes the ruling center-right New Democracy, which has been leading steadily in opinion surveys, has found cause for anxiety in examinging the data.

New Democracy 4.8 points ahead in MRB poll

A new opinion poll of voting intentions gives ruling center-right New Democracy a 4.8-percentage point lead over left-wing SYRIZA.

Asked about their voting preferences for the May 21 election by pollster MRB, 29.7% chose New Democracy, 24.9% SYRIZA, 8.3% socialist PASOK-Movement for Change, 5.1% Communist KKE, 4.6% nationalist Greek Solution and 3.2% left-wing MeRA25.

Progressive gov’t may depend on KKE or MeRA25 support, Tsipras says

In the event that a "progressive convergence" was 10-15 seats short of a parliamentary majority after the coming elections, the Communist KKE and Yanis Varoufakis' MeRA25 would be faced with the decision to support such a government or pave the way for the New Democracy to return to power, SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has said.

Greece gears for election on May 21, how the system works

Greece will hold a parliamentary election in May, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday, with the country gearing up for a vote which is unlikely to produce an outright winner immediately.

The conservative leader, whose term ends officially in July, said a national election will be held on May 21.
