United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has said he is "alarmed" by reports of ongoing Myanmar military air strikes on villages in Rakhine state, where locals told AFP more than 20 people were killed on Monday.

The lawsuit argues that the company’s failures to police content and its platform’s design contributed to real-world violence faced by the Rohingya community

Rohingya refugees sued Facebook on Dec. 6 for $150 billion over claims the social network is failing to stem hate speech on its platform, exacerbating violence against the vulnerable minority.

The complaint, lodged in a California court, says the algorithms that power the U.S.-based company promote disinformation and extremist thought that translates to real-world violence.

Turkey's Ambassador to Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan said on Nov. 13 that his country would continue its whole-hearted humanitarian support to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh until the peaceful repatriation of the persecuted people to their home country of Myanmar.

Like in 2017, when the Rohingya crisis hit Bangladesh, Turkey is once more one of the first countries to respond to the unprecedented damage caused by the massive fire that engulfed a large part of the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar.

Turkey on Feb. 1 "strongly" condemned a coup in Myanmar announced by the Southeast Asian country's military early on Feb. 1.

In a written statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country was "deeply concerned" by the power grab as "Turkey opposes any kind of military intervention."

A Turkish relief agency on Jan. 30 dispatched aid packages to Rohingya refugees in the southeastern Cox's Bazaar district of Bangladesh.

Istanbul-based Humanitarian Relief Foundation (İHH) sent packages of food and supplies for winter to 44,825 refugees who fled the genocide being committed in Myanmar.

At least 14 people drowned and dozens more were unaccounted for after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees sank off southern Bangladesh early on Feb. 11, officials said.    

Some 130 people were packed on the fishing trawler that was trying to get across the Bay of Bengal to Malaysia, coast guard spokesman Hamidul Islam told AFP. Seventy of them had so far been rescued.    

In a sweeping legal victory for members of the Rohingya Muslim minority, the United Nations' top court on Jan. 23 ordered Myanmar to take all measures in its power to prevent genocide against the Rohingya people.

The court's president, Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, said the International Court of Justice "is of the opinion that the Rohingya in Myanmar remain extremely vulnerable.''

A leading global money transfer service Western Union has stopped using a military-owned bank as one of its agents in Myanmar, rights groups said.
