Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged the country's influential Orthodox Church on Tuesday to respect coronavirus restrictions during Epiphany celebrations on Jan. 6 after Synod leaders said they would defy the lockdown.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will make a public statement about the latest developments in the eastern Mediterranean, his office said on Wednesday.

The statement is expected at 6.30 p.m. from Maximos Mansion.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Jerusalem Patriarchate and the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem on Tuesday. "The Greek state will always stand by the Jerusalem Patriarchate and the great mission it is undertaking in this difficult and, at the same time, exciting city and region," Mitsotakis told journalists.

Investments, energy and the broadening of Greek-Israeli relations will be at the center of a meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.

Mitsotakis' trip to Israel will be his first trip overseas after the coronavirus outbreak. He will be accompanied by six ministers, including defence and tourism.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is in favor of maintaining open lines of communication with Ankara even though "Turkey's recent decisions… have been particularly provocative for Greece" and urged the neighboring country to "de-escalate" the situation on the Greek-Turkish border.
